Mets' Young carted off after taking knee to head from teammate

New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field Thursday after being struck in the head by pitcher Nolan McLean's knee.

Young was taken to a hospital, where he underwent a CT scan that came back negative, Mets interim manager Andy Green told reporters after his team's 3-0 loss.

"(He's) still experiencing real concussion symptoms right now but has full use of his extremities, and (it) feels at this point in time like we've avoided the scariest outcomes," Green said, per SNY. "It was a terrifying moment on a baseball field. Took him a while to come to. Really scary collision."

Young and McLean both went to field Justin Crawford's slow grounder up the first-base line unsuccessfully. As Young dove to try and get the ball, McLean attempted to leap over his teammate and instead kneed Young in the face. The force of the collision appeared to knock him out cold for a moment.

Medical personnel quickly responded and stabilized Young before putting him on a stretcher, and he gave a thumbs up while being carted off the field.

Young has appeared in 103 games for the Mets this season as a first baseman, DH, and occasional corner outfielder. The 31-year-old, now in his fourth big-league season, is hitting .266/.330/.429 with nine homers and 39 RBIs over 342 plate appearances.

Mark Vientos took over for Young at first base.

McLean was not hurt on the play and completed the top of the sixth inning before turning it over to the bullpen. Green described the rookie right-hander as being "shaken" following the incident.

"(Nolan) knew it was a really bad collision and still was willing to go back out the next inning. (I) didn't feel that was in his best interest at that point in time," Green said.

He added, "He's a heck of a person. He's a great competitor. But I think the humanity hit him pretty hard right there too."
