While not every team's championship dreams are realistic, each organization enters the season with its own set of expectations. And thanks to the NBA's new anti-tanking measures, this year could be extremely competitive.
Here's a look at how each of the league's 30 teams might exceed their projected win totals and how they could fall short.

Atlanta Hawks
2026-27 win total: O/U 43.5
Why they will exceed win total: Adding Lu Dort should strengthen a competent core that boasted the league's ninth-best defensive rating last season. Jalen Johnson taking the next step in his All-Star ascendancy wouldn't hurt Atlanta's chances of nabbing a top-six spot, either.
Why they won't exceed win total: The departures of Zaccharie Risacher and Jonathan Kuminga could prove too much for Quin Snyder and Co. to overcome. As unlikely as that seems, the Hawks also have to navigate a much-improved and far deeper Eastern Conference.
Boston Celtics
2026-27 win total: O/U 51.5
Why they will exceed win total: Despite losing Jaylen Brown, the Celtics enter the campaign with the second-highest win total in the East - and for good reason. Jayson Tatum will be back to his best, and the additions of Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley have bolstered Boston's depth.
Why they won't exceed win total: As will be cited many times herein, the improved Eastern Conference landscape could have negative consequences for many teams - Boston included. Additionally, Paul George won't replicate Brown's 28.7 points, 6.9 boards, and 5.1 assists.
Brooklyn Nets
2026-27 win total: O/U 24.5
Why they will exceed win total: Acquiring Julius Randle gives the Nets another skilled scorer alongside Michael Porter Jr., who's coming off a career year. Egor Demin's impressive development and the addition of sixth overall pick Mikel Brown Jr. will give Brooklyn's backcourt a major boost.
Why they won't exceed win total: The Nets have to navigate the Atlantic Division, arguably the league's most stacked after LeBron James joined Philly and Kawhi Leonard returned to Toronto. It could be a long season in Brooklyn.
Charlotte Hornets
2026-27 win total: O/U 38.5
Why they will exceed win total: This is now Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel's team, and the emerging duo showed glimpses of an efficient winning formula last season. Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, and Royce O'Neale add veteran expertise.
Why they won't exceed win total: Exits for LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges could result in short-term pain for long-term gain. Replacing the pair's combined 37.2 points and 10.3 assists per game will be next to impossible for a team slated for a slight regression.
Chicago Bulls
2026-27 win total: O/U 28.5
Why they will exceed win total: Norman Powell's addition, Josh Giddey's triple-double prowess, and the ascensions of Matas Buzelis and fourth overall pick Caleb Wilson could propel a roster that flourishes under new coach Tiago Splitter.
Why they won't exceed win total: Splitter and new vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham have been brought in to spearhead a long-awaited rebuild. Fine-tuning at a developmental stage may take priority over results.
Cleveland Cavaliers
2026-27 win total: O/U 48.5
Why they will exceed win total: Acquiring Peyton Watson in a sign-and-trade gives the Cavaliers an athletic wing who can defend multiple positions, something the team desperately lacked. Donovan Mitchell and James Harden also form one of the league's elite scoring backcourts.
Why they won't exceed win total: Will inserting Watson into the starting five be enough to offset Mitchell's and Harden's defensive shortcomings, especially after the Cavs lost above-average defenders Dean Wade and Max Strus in the offseason?
Dallas Mavericks
2026-27 win total: O/U 35.5
Why they will exceed win total: Dallas will almost certainly be better than last year, but by how much? Kyrie Irving's return from injury will form an imposing two-man offensive force with Cooper Flagg, and the Mavs' savvy additions of Zaccharie Risacher and Santi Aldama could see them take a sizeable leap.
Why they won't exceed win total: Injuries have blighted the second half of Irving's career, as he's appeared in 60 or more games only once in the last six seasons. And aside from Irving and Flagg, the Mavericks' roster lacks difference-makers and top-end talent.
Denver Nuggets
2026-27 win total: O/U 47.5
Why they will exceed win total: The Nuggets owned the league's best offensive rating (122.6) last season, the second-highest mark in NBA history. With mid-range iso savant DeMar DeRozan joining the mix, he should thrive alongside Nikola Jokic's playmaking.
Why they won't exceed win total: Skirting steep luxury tax penalties and restrictive second-apron roster rules doesn't win games, and Watson's departure leaves a massive defensive void. DeRozan, Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon aren't exactly shutdown defenders.
Detroit Pistons
2026-27 win total: O/U 50.5
Why they will exceed the win total: A drop of almost a dozen wins seems too steep for a team that finished with the No. 1 seed in the East and still boasts an emerging young core in Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Ausar Thompson.
Why they won't exceed win total: Beyond the obvious caveat that the East is deeper, the Pistons failed to recruit a bona fide star to pair with Cunningham. They'll also need Duren to be far better than he was in the playoffs.
Golden State Warriors
2026-27 win total: O/U 39.5
Why they will exceed win total: The eventual returns from injury for Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, paired with the immediate impact of plug-and-play lottery pick Yaxel Lendeborg, will boost the Warriors' chances of finishing on the right side of. 500 and bettering last year's finish.
Why they won't exceed win total: A rapidly aging core of Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Butler could become too dependent on 38-year-old Steph Curry's continued brilliance and may be prone to further regression and injury.
Houston Rockets
2026-27 win total: O/U 47.5
Why they will exceed win total: Fred VanVleet's return from a torn ACL will give the Rockets a traditional facilitator after a year of relying on a playmaking-by-committee approach. Adding veterans Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic should also strengthen Houston's depth.
Why they won't exceed win total: An unwanted habit of poor tight-game execution could haunt Ime Udoka and Co. again. Last season, the Rockets were 5-9 in contests decided by three points or fewer and a shocking 1-7 in overtime games.
Indiana Pacers
2026-27 win total: O/U 44.5
Why they will exceed win total: Tyrese Haliburton is finally back. Just two seasons after winning 50 regular-season games and storming to the NBA Finals, Indiana returns essentially the same core, with Ivica Zubac replacing Myles Turner.
Why they won't exceed win total: Haliburton hasn't played since Game 7 of the 2025 Finals, and his recovery from a ruptured Achilles was complicated by shingles. There's no guarantee the All-Star will immediately regain his previous form, which could result in a slow start for the Pacers.
Los Angeles Clippers
2026-27 win total: O/U 28.5
Why they will exceed win total: Is a core of Darius Garland, Brandon Ingram, Rui Hachimura, Max Strus, Brook Lopez, and No. 5 pick Keaton Wagler incapable of recording 29-plus wins? Expectations are low, but there's a scenario where this group jells quickly and hovers around the .500 mark.
Why they won't exceed win total: For the first time under Tyronn Lue, the Clippers enter the campaign without legitimate playoff aspirations. Moving Garland to replenish the draft reservoir depleted by the cap-circumvention fallout could sink those ambitions further. Ingram's ongoing recovery from right heel and Achilles injuries is also an ominous portent.
Los Angeles Lakers
2026-27 win total: O/U 46.5
Why they will exceed win total: Luka Doncic is coming off arguably the best season of his career, and the organization has begun tailoring this version of the Lakers in his image following LeBron James' exit. Doncic's and Austin Reaves' offensive exploits could be enough to exceed modest expectations.
Why they won't exceed win total: Only one James remains, and it's not the one who had a huge influence on winning (sorry, Bronny). Key contributors Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, and Rui Hachimura are also gone, and the roster could take time to crystallize. The defense might be really bad, too.
Memphis Grizzlies
2026-27 win total: O/U 28.5
Why they will exceed win total: Although the Grizzlies are in the early stages of a rebuild, only one of their first seven games is against a team that finished with a winning record, and it's the Blazers (42-40). A hot start could inspire a respectable season.
Why they won't exceed win total: Winning at least 29 games for a team that finished last season with 22 victories seems unlikely, especially since Jaren Jackson Jr., now with the Jazz, was in the lineup for 14 of those wins. Ja Morant and Santi Aldama's 33.5 combined points per game also flew the coop.
Miami Heat
2026-27 win total: O/U 46.5
Why they will exceed win total: Few players can raise a team's ceiling like Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two-time MVP should form an imposing frontcourt duo with Bam Adebayo, and he's just two years removed from earning All-NBA first-team honors and finishing third in the MVP race.
Why they won't exceed win total: After the Heat said farewell to Tyler Herro and Norm Powell in the offseason, veterans Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr. will be under pressure to replace their contributions. Miami's depth also took a significant hit with exits from Kel'el Ware and Jaime Jaquez Jr.
Milwaukee Bucks
2026-27 win total: O/U 24.5
Why they will exceed win total: The Bucks are in full-blown rebuild mode. However, they could surprise doubters if Tyler Herro delivers offensively and rookies Brayden Burries and Nate Ament quickly acclimate to the NBA under new head coach Taylor Jenkins.
Why they won't exceed win total: Conversely, Milwaukee could be very bad precisely because Herro is the No. 1 option, even with his improved efficiency. It's hard to fathom this team experiencing anything beyond modest gains in its first season without Giannis Antetokounmpo since 2012-13.
Minnesota Timberwolves
2026-27 win total: O/U 48.5
Why they will exceed win total: Naz Reid's and Julius Randle's departures will hurt, but LaMelo Ball should provide elite playmaking and perimeter shooting that lessens the pressure on Anthony Edwards. Ball's presence will allow the T-Wolves star to thrive off the ball and face fewer double teams.
Why they won't exceed win total: Jaden McDaniels is a natural fit to slide to power forward in Reid's and Randle's absences. Minnesota will rely heavily on him and incoming starting small forward Ayo Dosunmu this year, particularly with Jonathan Kuminga second on the depth chart at both positions.
New Orleans Pelicans
2026-27 win total: O/U 27.5
Why they will exceed win total: Jamahl Mosley's influence could pair well with a core that includes Zion Williamson, Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III, and now Bennedict Mathurin, leading to unexpectedly positive results. We're not saying it'll happen, but it could.
Why they won't exceed win total: The Pelicans made no major roster upgrades and failed to address positional overlap and redundancies, despite winning just 26 games in 2025-26. One of the league's worst defensive teams should be remarkably easy to score against again.
New York Knicks
2026-27 win total: O/U 52.5
Why they will exceed win total: After a year of tinkering with rotations in his debut campaign in the Big Apple, Mike Brown can use a trusted approach from the jump to ease the burden on Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns and get better results from the reserve unit.
Why they won't exceed win total: The target is squarely on the Knicks as the defending champs, and a much-improved Eastern Conference could make winning 50-plus games an arduous task. Andre Drummond also isn't a like-for-like replacement for Mitchell Robinson.
Oklahoma City Thunder
2026-27 win total: O/U 60.5
Why they will exceed win total: The Thunder posted 64 wins last season despite All-Star wing Jalen Williams appearing in only 33 games. Even if Oklahoma City doesn't finish with the league's best record like in the past two seasons, 61-plus wins isn't that big of an ask.
Why they won't exceed win total: Although Alex Caruso is still in OKC, Dort's departure could impact the team's chances of winning. Dort was the Thunder's chief agitator, provided elite point-of-attack defense, and did the dirty work that allowed teammates to focus on other duties.
Orlando Magic
2026-27 win total: O/U 43.5
Why they will exceed win total: Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane, and Jalen Suggs shared the floor for fewer than 200 minutes during an injury-ravaged 2025-26 season. When healthy in the playoffs, they showed that they can push a team of the Pistons' caliber to seven games.
Why they won't exceed win total: Nikola Vucevic's return doesn't move the needle in terms of offseason splashes after his relatively disastrous spell in Boston. Sean Sweeney may also hit a few bumps in his first year as a head coach, despite his impressive resume as an NBA assistant.
Philadelphia 76ers
2026-27 win total: O/U 50.5
Why they will exceed win total: The Sixers now boast arguably the league's best starting five with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in the fold. Additionally, Philly has 13 back-to-backs on the schedule compared to 16 last season, which should lighten the load on James and the oft-injured Joel Embiid.
Why they won't exceed win total: Chemistry could be an issue since James, Brown, Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey are all ball-dominant players. Embiid's frequent absences (he's played 96 games over the last three seasons) will put a burden on backup center Ariel Hukporti, who's largely unproven.
Phoenix Suns
2026-27 win total: O/U 39.5
Why they will exceed win total: The Suns won 45 games a year ago under a first-time head coach, overcoming a slew of injuries that cost Devin Booker, Jalen Green, and Dillon Brooks 98 combined games. Phoenix's trade for Miles Bridges also gives the starting five another reliable scorer.
Why they won't exceed win total: The departures of core pieces Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale could hurt Phoenix's depth and 3-point shooting. With a myriad of shooting guards and small forwards making up the contributing core, roster balance might be an issue for the Suns.
Portland Trail Blazers
2026-27 win total: O/U 41.5
Why they will exceed win total: If Damian Lillard returns to his best after missing the entire 2025-26 campaign with a ruptured Achilles, Portland could boast one of the league's deepest backcourts with Ja Morant, Jrue Holiday, and Scott Henderson.
Why they won't exceed win total: The Blazers feel like a house of cards under penny-pinching owner Tom Dundon, and the hope is that this doesn't translate into a poor on-court product. Portland's undersized backcourt of largely minus defenders also has its obvious risks.
Sacramento Kings
2026-27 win total: O/U 21.5
Why they will exceed win total: Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis, and Keegan Murray are healthy after missing a combined 175 games last season. Along with the league's new anti-tanking measures and a relatively middling 2027 draft class, the Kings should be more competitive.
Why they won't exceed win total: LaVine, set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, and Sabonis are sure to be popular names in trade rumors as Sacramento looks to offload big-money veterans and hand the keys to Darius Acuff Jr.
San Antonio Spurs
2026-27 win total: O/U 60.5
Why they will exceed win total: Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper will presumably take the next step in their ascensions, and Tobias Harris gives Mitch Johnson and Co. a reliable veteran presence who should correct prior late-game execution issues.
Why they won't exceed win total: Improvement is rarely linear. After playing with house money in the 2026 Finals, the expectations are much higher for the Spurs this year. Those expectations add pressure, and Johnson will need much more from De'Aaron Fox to avoid any regression.
Toronto Raptors
2026-27 win total: O/U 45.5
Why they will exceed win total: Kawhi Leonard's return significantly improves the Raptors' offense while also strengthening a defense that posted the fifth-best rating in 2025-26. Toronto should be an even bigger chore to face this season.
Why they won't exceed win total: Leonard's injury history is always a risk, and Jakob Poeltl is unlikely to suddenly stop being a liability. The Raptors' reserve frontcourt behind Poeltl is incredibly thin when Collin Murray-Boyles isn't the small-ball five.
Utah Jazz
2026-27 win total: O/U 37.5
Why they will exceed win total: The Jazz are poised for a major leap after years of prioritizing development, with Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. forming an offensively gifted frontline alongside a serviceable Jusuf Nurkic. And thanks to some solid offseason moves, Will Hardy's roster has real depth.
Why they won't exceed win total: Utah has been a bottom-two defensive unit in each of the last three seasons, and former DPOY Jackson can only do so much. The battle for the West's play-in spots could also be brutal for a team with little experience in those kinds of situations.
Washington Wizards
2026-27 win total: O/U 35.5
Why they will exceed win total: Trae Young could be the elite facilitator who gets the best out of AJ Dybantsa and an emerging young core blessed with depth and size. If - and it's a big if - Anthony Davis can stay healthy, he should pair nicely alongside Dybantsa and Alex Sarr.
Why they won't exceed win total: Transitioning from a perennial bottom-dweller in rebuild mode to a team with playoff ambitions can come with challenges, and a stacked Eastern Conference could exploit any stumbles.
