Tennessee Titans coach Robert Saleh says Cam Ward's pocket footwork is improving, but he believes the quarterback may have developed bad habits because of the high number of sacks he took as a rookie.
"I do think he's getting better in that regard," Saleh said Wednesday. "I think he's starting to really appreciate the offensive line because I think they are doing a good job protecting him, and I think he's building that trust."
Saleh added: "You got to remember, the young man was sacked however many times last year, so I'm sure there's some PTSD there."
Ward was sacked 55 times as a rookie, tying Geno Smith for the most in the NFL. This season, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick has been sacked just five times through three games.
Saleh said Ward has looked comfortable in the pocket at the start of most games this year, though old tendencies sometimes creep back in as games progress.
"He's getting better," the head coach said. "He's trusting it. His footwork is lasting him longer into games if that makes."
The Titans hired Saleh this offseason, and he brought in Brian Daboll as his offensive coordinator to unlock more of Ward's potential.
Over three games, Ward has completed 62.5% of his passes, up slightly from 59.8% in 2025. However, the Titans are 0-3, with an offense that ranks 30th in scoring and 31st in yardage.
Ward also has two passing touchdowns and one interception this year, with his lone pick coming in the end zone in the final seconds of a 12-7 loss to the New York Giants in Week 3.
