The Detroit Red Wings are increasing their flexibility when it comes to trade discussions involving defenseman Simon Edvinsson.
The Red Wings would still prefer to receive NHL-ready talent in exchange for the restricted free agent, but they're also open to considering future-based packages centered around draft picks and prospects, sources told Sportsnet's Frank Seravalli.
Edvinsson remains unsigned, and reports Saturday said he'd prefer a trade out of Detroit.
The 23-year-old returned to Sweden to train after initially being in Detroit for training camp.
Edvinsson tallied 25 points in 72 games last season while averaging a career-high 22:21 per contest. He posted a career-high 31 points the year prior.
The Red Wings drafted Edvinsson sixth overall in 2021. He possesses an intriguing toolkit, blending his 6-foot-6 frame with a max skating speed that ranked in the 71st percentile last season, per NHL Edge.
Detroit has missed the playoffs in 10 straight campaigns, the longest active drought in the league.
