Ottawa Senators forward William Eklund will miss 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery on a torn ankle tendon, head coach Travis Green confirmed Thursday to Postmedia's Bruce Garrioch.

Eklund was injured Oct. 8 against the Philadelphia Flyers after being hit into the boards. Green initially said the forward wouldn't require surgery.

The Senators acquired Eklund from the San Jose Sharks in June for the ninth overall draft pick. Ottawa obtained the selection from the Florida Panthers in the Brady Tkachuk trade.

Eklund notched 53 points in 78 games last season. He had a goal and an assist in four contests in the new campaign before getting hurt.
