Tiebreakers
The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout rounds, along with the eight best third-place teams.
If two or more teams in the same group are level on points after the conclusion of the group stage, the tiebreakers are as follows:
1. Head-to-head results between the teams
2. Goal difference in the games between the teams
3. Highest number of goals scored in games between the teams
4. Overall goal difference in all group games
5. Overall highest number of goals scored in the group
6. Fewest number of red or yellow cards received
7. FIFA ranking
If third-place finishers across the various groups are tied on points, the tiebreakers to determine who advances are as follows:
1. Goal difference
2. Goals scored
3. Fewest number of red or yellow cards received
4. FIFA ranking
Group A
Mexico has already locked up top spot in the group, and will play a third-place finisher from Group C, E, F, H, or I in the next round.
South Korea needs just a draw in its final match against South Africa to secure second place. The Koreans have a superior head-to-head record versus Czechia after winning their tournament opener, and control their fate.
Czechia and South Africa are still alive, but must win their final group games to have any hope of advancing.
Remaining fixtures (June 24)
Czechia vs. Mexico (Mexico City - 9 p.m. ET)
South Africa vs. South Korea (Monterrey - 9 p.m. ET)
Group B
Canada's 6-0 destruction of Qatar puts the co-host in prime position to win Group B. The Canadians need just a draw against Switzerland to seal top spot.
The winner of the group will face a third-place team from Group E, F, G, I, or J, while the second-place finisher will take on the second-place finisher from Group A.
If there's a winner between Bosnia and Qatar, that side has an excellent chance to advance as one of the best third-place finishers. A draw in that contest will almost certainly send both teams home, though.
Remaining fixtures (June 24)
Switzerland vs. Canada (Vancouver - 3 p.m. ET)
Bosnia vs. Qatar (Seattle - 3 p.m. ET)
Group C
Brazil leads Morocco by virtue of its superior goal difference, and the Selecao will finish first if they simply match Morocco's result in the group finale (and maintain a better goal difference if both teams win).
Scotland should still have a good chance to qualify even if it finishes third, but the Scots could yet top the group if they take down Brazil in their finale.
Haiti has already been eliminated.
The first- and second-place finishers in Group C cross over with Group F in the round of 32.
Remaining fixtures (June 24)
Morocco vs. Haiti (Atlanta - 6 p.m. ET)
Scotland vs. Brazil (Miami - 6 p.m. ET)
Group D
The United States is in the enviable position of being able to rest key players going into its group finale against already-eliminated Turkiye. The Americans have sealed first place in Group D after two wins, and will meet a third-place finisher from Group B, E, F, I, or J in the round of 32.
Australia, meanwhile, needs just a draw against Paraguay to move on.
Remaining fixtures (June 25)
Turkiye vs. USA (Los Angeles - 10 p.m. ET)
Paraguay vs. Australia (San Francisco - 10 p.m. ET)
Group E
Germany's dramatic comeback victory over the Ivory Coast in Toronto sent Julian Nagelsmann's men to the next round as group winners. They'll take on a third-place finisher from Group A, B, C, D, or F in the round of 32.
Despite that painful loss, the Ivorians remain in a strong position to qualify for the knockouts.
Ecuador, a pretournament dark horse, is in serious danger going into a group finale against Germany after failing to score in its opening two games. The Germans may be inclined to rest starters in that match, though, so all hope is certainly not lost for the stout South American squad.
Curacao, incredibly, still has a shot at second place in the group.
Remaining fixtures (June 25)
Curacao vs. Ivory Coast (Philadelphia - 4 p.m. ET)
Ecuador vs. Germany (New Jersey - 4 p.m. ET)
Group F
The Netherlands controls its own fate after a 5-1 dismantling of Sweden that boosted both the Oranje's goal difference and goal total.
The matchup between Japan and Sweden in the group finale could end up being one of the most intriguing of Matchday 3, as both teams could still win the group, finish second, or face an anxious wait in third depending on the result. Japan will automatically reach the round of 32 with a draw.
Tunisia has already been eliminated despite Herve Renard's best efforts at a rescue mission.
Remaining fixtures (June 25)
Tunisia vs. Netherlands (Kansas City - 7 p.m. ET)
Japan vs. Sweden (Dallas - 7 p.m. ET)
Group G
How many people expected this going into the final round of group fixtures?
Belgium has flattered to deceive thus far, and needs a win against New Zealand to be sure of reaching the next round. Anything else, and the Red Devils could be one of the biggest names exiting the competition early.
Egypt is the only team with a win so far in this group. Mohamed Salah and Co. likely have enough points already to advance no matter what happens versus Iran, but the Pharaohs will want to build on their first-ever World Cup victory and top the group, which would give them the theoretical advantage of a matchup with a third-place finisher in the next round.
Whoever finishes second here will play the second-place finisher from Group D, which will be either Australia or Paraguay.
Remaining fixtures (June 26)
Egypt vs. Iran (Seattle - 11 p.m. ET)
New Zealand vs. Belgium (Vancouver - 11 p.m. ET)
Group H
A draw against Uruguay will almost certainly be enough for Spain to win Group H after La Roja's dominant victory over Saudi Arabia got the pretournament favorite back on track.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde can continue to author one of the most incredible stories in World Cup history if it can defeat the Saudis. Three points would send the Blue Sharks to the knockouts regardless of what happens between Spain and Uruguay in the concurrent fixture on Friday, and even a draw could yet be enough for second place if everything breaks their way.
That all leaves Marcelo Bielsa's team in the most perilous position.
Group H crosses over with Group J in the knockout stage, meaning the side that finishes second has the daunting task of taking on Lionel Messi and Argentina in the round of 32.
Remaining fixtures (June 26)
Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia (Houston - 8 p.m. ET)
Uruguay vs. Spain (Guadalajara - 8 p.m. ET)
Group I
With red-hot strikers Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland leading the way, France and Norway have already secured passage to the knockout rounds, and their clash in the group finale could be one of the most entertaining games of the opening round - just don't tell Haaland that.
France will take top spot with a draw because of its superior goal difference, and that would mean the difference between playing a third-place finisher in the round of 32 or taking on the second-place finisher from Group E.
Senegal and Iraq will both be going all out for a victory in their match, as three points for either could be enough to advance.
Remaining fixtures (June 26)
Noway vs. France (Boston - 3 p.m. ET)
Senegal vs. Iraq (Toronto - 3 p.m. ET)
Group J
Golden Boot leader and history-maker Messi has already led Argentina to the round of 32 after scoring all five of the Albiceleste's goals through two games (both wins). The reigning champion, assured of top spot in this quartet, will already be preparing for a knockout match against the second-place finisher from Group H.
Austria needs just a draw in its finale against Algeria to finish second.
Jordan has already been eliminated after two losses.
Remaining fixtures (June 27)
Jordan vs. Argentina (Dallas - 10 p.m. ET)
Algeria vs. Austria (Kansas City - 10 p.m. ET)
Group K
Colombia could upset the apple cart with a result against Portugal in a tantalizing Group K finale Saturday. A point will be enough for Los Cafeteros to relegate Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. to second place, and the reward for finishing first is a last-32 meeting with a third-place finisher from Group D, E, I, J, or L.
The second-place finisher in this group will meet whoever finishes second in Group L (England, Ghana, or Croatia).
DR Congo and Uzbekistan both need three points in their match if either one hopes to keep their World Cup campaign alive; the former will be in a very strong position to advance with a win.
Remaining fixtures (June 27)
Colombia vs. Portugal (Miami - 7:30 p.m. ET)
DR Congo vs. Uzbekistan (Atlanta - 7:30 p.m. ET)
Group L
England, not for the first time, failed to build on an encouraging tournament opener and therefore must wait to secure progression to the next round. Nevertheless, the Three Lions are still well positioned going into their final group contest against already-eliminated Panama.
Meanwhile, it's all to play for between Ghana and Croatia when they lock horns in Philadelphia. The Black Stars only need a point to secure at least second place in the group. A win for either side would actually give them first place if England drops points against Panama.
Group L could be in for a wild finale.
Remaining fixtures (June 27)
Panama vs. England (New Jersey - 5 p.m. ET)
Croatia vs. Ghana (Philadelphia - 5 p.m. ET)
