Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota is likely to miss the remainder of the preseason due to a sprained MCL, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Mariota appeared to sustain the injury during the first quarter of the Commanders' 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins on Friday. Dolphins linebacker Tyrel Dodson landed on the 32-year-old after he completed a pass to Dyami Brown. Shortly afterward, he walked to the medical tent before going on to the locker room.
Mariota's availability for Washington's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13 remains uncertain.
The Oregon product is entering his third season with the Commanders. He's served as the primary backup to starter Jayden Daniels over the past two years. In 2025, the team posted a 2-6 record when Mariota filled in for Daniels, who missed time due to multiple injuries.
Last season, Mariota passed for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while completing 61.2% of his throws.
The Commanders brought back Mariota on a one-year, $7-million deal this offseason.
Third-year pro Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis will see more reps with Mariota sidelined. The Commanders play the Detroit Lions on Aug. 22 before closing out their exhibition slate against the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 28.
